On average, each herbal medicine was sold at the rate of 10 capsules per customer, giving an average of 1.5 customers per working day. Such a number is not unusual in the country where customers may be willing to wait for an hour or more to collect medicines. Thus if the actual selling time is longer than the time stated by the respondents, a significant number of customers could have accessed the selling area and developed the need to look for alternative medicines. Altena et al. reported that, on average, 17.5% of patients provided with herbal medicines found it acceptable to have left without receiving the medicines that they needed.43 It is, therefore, not surprising that this study identifies herbal medicine purchases as the most common activity performed daily by community pharmacists, with Mean=0.85, Sd=0.43, n=10. Other similar studies from Australia13,39 and the United Kingdom45 also reported that herbal medicine was one of the most common activities undertaken by community pharmacists. The participants in this study, however, also indicated that herbal medicine sales were not time-consuming which contradicts the findings of the pharmacy owner/manager in Queensland (Australia) who stated that herbal medicine sales were time-consuming.39 They also described it as one of the most stressful activities in the busy environment of the pharmacy.46
The study also indicates that the amount of sales of herbal medicines was higher during working hours than non-working hours. This is contrary to the findings of the pharmacists in the United Kingdom who indicated that they were more frustrated and stressed when their herbal medicine selling time coincided with their normal meal or sleep times.45 Results of this study also contrast the findings of the pharmacists in South-western India9, studies conducted on physicians and other health professionals in the UAE,47 China,48 Saudi Arabia49 and Pakistan50 who reported that the amount of clinics attended by a patient and the amount of patients seen per day were the factors affecting the sales of herbal medicines. Saudi Arabian doctors indicated that the sales of herbal medicines were mainly influenced by the number of patients who visited the practice and the number of pharmacies in their local area;45 while some Chinese pharmacists indicated that the selling of herbal medicines was influenced by the number of patients who visited the clinic to purchase medicines, the number of pharmacies situated in the area and the available time.48 d2c66b5586
