I also have a very old HP LaserJet 1020. I had it running via USB on my MacBook last year, but after upgrading to OSX 13.4 it seems the compatibility is gone. Note that the driver I formerly used was labeled for a 1022, not 1020, but it worked. Anyway the printer no longer shows up in my list of printers. I tried following Shlomi's post of 8/5/17 but like you, the list of printers was blank, and no way to select or define the HP.
I did read about AirPrint. I unhooked my HP 1020 and plugged it in with the USB to the port on my Apple Airport Extreme. After that, under system preferences and click +, the HP 1020 appears as a choice as a Bonjour printer. No other drivers needed ... works fine.

Now I was looking for a wireless printing bridge. Several options like the HP Wireless USB Print Server or devices from Logilink or TP-Link looked promising but I did not find any compatibility notes about the Mac to Print Server to LaserJet 1020 line. So I opted to try an Apple Airport Express (latest incarnation from 2012) because at least the LaserJet 1022 was listed at a compatibility list for the Airport Extrem at
Update: At OS X 10.9 (Maverick) it seems there are not much HP printer drivers preinstalled. Looks like there is no post-install option as in 10.8. But when upgrading a 10.8 installation to 10.9 the Laserjet 1022 printer driver just works. So at a fresh 10.9 I tried to install the drivers for 10.8 and found it working without problem so far on 10.9 too. I used the HP Printer Drivers v.2.16.1 for OS X installation package from Apple.
I have HP Laserjet 1020 connected to Airport Express and, after installing HP drivers, can print from MacBook Air. But there is no way to print from iOS devices because they need AirPrint compatible printer. Firstly, i installed handyPrint on mac, and everything was fine, but it works only when mac is on. So I tried and Printer Pro Lite application on iPhone. App can see printer but doesn't print anything. So I try to understand is there any possible way to tune my printer as AirPrint printer to print whenever I want? Or maybe install the right app on iPhone which can print? 2b1af7f3a8
